Could a Government Shutdown Get Hung Up on Hemp?

Could a Government Shutdown Get Hung Up on Hemp?

There’s a wave rolling through Washington — and believe it or not, hemp might be caught right in the middle of it.

Congress is scrambling to keep the government open, but tucked inside that debate are efforts that could sink hemp-derived products nationwide — the same kinds of products you can legally enjoy right here in Texas.

The Backstory: A Ban That Keeps Washing Back In

Last year, Representative Mary Miller tried to slip a hemp ban into the Farm Bill. The proposal would’ve outlawed nearly every hemp product on the market, even the compliant ones that meet the federal 0.3% Δ9-THC limit.

That push failed to make shore — but a new attempt is rising again, this time inside a massive government spending bill.

According to leading voices like the U.S. Hemp Roundtable and the Hemp Industry and Farmers of America, certain members of Congress are trying to add last-minute language that would criminalize hemp products containing any detectable THC.

Sounds harsh? It is. And it would pull the tide out from under small businesses, family farms, and responsible adult consumers nationwide.

A Call to Action from Senator Rand Paul

On October 28, Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky hosted a live webinar that drew thousands from across the hemp community. His message? Now’s the time to speak up.

Paul’s been pushing back against these bans, instead calling for common-sense regulation — like an 18-month federal study on hemp and proposals from Senator Wyden and Congressman Griffith that could finally bring consistent national standards.

They’re not perfect, but they’re miles better than banning a legitimate American industry overnight.

Texas Has Seen This Before

If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is. Back in 2023, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick tried to block hemp-derived products here in Texas.

But Governor Abbott stepped in, vetoed the ban, and instead called for smarter regulations — ones that protect consumers while keeping Texas-grown businesses afloat.

Why It Matters

If Congress quietly slips this hemp ban into a giant “minibus” spending bill, it could do real damage — shuttering small brands, wiping out thousands of jobs, and cutting off farmers from a crop that’s finally paying off.

This debate should be about funding the government — not pulling the plug on hemp.
